Fun Facts for Labor Day Weekend at the Lake of the Ozarks

Everyone at the lake is gearing up for an exciting Labor Day Weekend, and most of you that don't live here are getting ready to head our way! This is a great weekend to get out on the water and take advantage of the best boat rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks

All of the summer attractions are still open and there is incredible live music scheduled at all of the waterfront hot spots. When you stop to enjoy some of these places, you'll need some interesting conversation topics. BomBay Boat Rental Co. found a few Labor Day fun facts to make you sound like an expert.

Labor Day Fun Facts

-New York City was the location for the very first Labor Day parade on September 5, 1882. It was organized by the Central Labor Union to honor workers with a fun festival that they could enjoy with their families.

-So many states began recognizing Labor Day as a holiday on their own, a bill was approved on June 28, 1894 to make it a legal holiday on the first Monday of every September.

-Canada celebrates their Labour Day along with the U.S.A., but over 80 other counties honor International Worker's Day on May 1 instead.

-In the 19th century, many Americans were required to work 12-hour work days, and some of them didn't even get a day off! (When did they go boating?) The Adamson Act strove to remedy this horrible fact in 1916 by declaring that the work day could be no longer than 8 hours.

-Many in the retail industry claim that Labor Day Weekend is the 2nd largest sales weekend of the year after Black Friday. Perfect, because while those people are busy shopping, there's more open space on the lake for you to cruise!

-Labor Day is the third most popular holiday to enjoy a good old-fashioned BBQ, beat out only by Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Those are also huge days for boating, and there is plenty of room on our Lake of the Ozarks boat rentals for coolers and picnic baskets.

Your friends will think you're quite the informed history buff when you whip those facts out. If they don't seem impressed enough, no worries, just hop back in the boat and let the hum of the engine fill the silence. You'll all be having such a great time out on the lake that it won't matter.

Stay Safe on the Water

While you are having all that fun, BomBay Boat Rental Co. wants to make sure you stay as safe as possible. Make sure to remember the following tips while you are out on the water, especially on a busy holiday weekend.

  • Slow down.
  • Be aware of other watercraft & people in the water.
  • Fill out a float plan before you take off.
  • Keep an eye on your gas levels and the weather forecast.
  • ALWAYS have a designated captain. NO drinking & boating EVER!

Come Back Again This Fall

It's going to be a busy weekend at the lake, and we can't wait! The fun doesn't stop after this weekend though. Even though the bulk of the crowd won't be here in the fall, the weather is still perfect for boating, and the upcoming autumn scenery is simply breathtaking.

You can go ahead and reserve a Lake of the Ozarks waverunner rental or boat rental now to use this September. It's also a great time to try your hand at paddleboarding at the Lake of the Ozarks. Give us a call and we'll get you set up for a lot of fun on the water.

Find Fun on the Water - Now Through Labor Day & Beyond!

In our opinion, every single day is a great time to get out on the water, but for the next couple of weekends, there are some exciting things going on for boating at the Lake of the Ozarks to make it even better. Whether you enjoy high speed and lots of fellow boaters, or you prefer quieter sections of the lake, BomBay Boat Rental Co. has a few suggestions for every type of boater.

High Speed & Big Crowds

We covered details about the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in last week's blog. This Friday, August 26, is the Shootout Poker Run. You're can easily make a few new friends among the 8 stops on the route, and you could even win some great prizes while you're at it.

Saturday and Sunday, August 27-28, is when the speed races take place. Thousands of people will tie up together to line the course and share in the excitement of these incredible boats that are all vying for the title of "Top Gun." It's a long couple of days, but an experience both race fans and party people should experience. You can arrange to rent one of our ski boats or tritoons for the entire weekend and see it all.

Fewer People but Lots of Action

If you don't want to spend your weekend with thousands of people, but still enjoy a bit of a crowd, all of the waterfront bars and restaurants are still open for their summer hours.

While most of the boaters are at the races, the establishments that aren't on that side of the lake will be a little less lively than usual, but still plenty of fun. Most of them will have talented musicians entertaining, and Lake of the Ozarks restaurants are filled with amazing food choices.

Chilling Out On the Water

For those of you that prefer to cove out, get in some swimming, and maybe even a little water skiing or tubing, there are plenty of quiet coves for you to enjoy. Some of the busier coves will even be a bit less crowded than usual with so many people at the Shootout. The water is still warm and perfect for playing in this time of year. We have paddleboard rentals too, if you're up for learning something new.

Labor Day Weekend Fun

The water will be alive with activity for the holiday weekend, so you will be able to find lots of fun happening at all of the waterfront attractions for Labor Day. As always, there will be plenty of fireworks displays happening, and watching those from a Lake of the Ozarks boat rental is a special experience. All of the displays will begin once it gets dark enough, generally around 9:30 pm, and more may be added before the holiday.

The Fun Continues After Labor Day

The next couple of weekends will pack the lake full of boaters, enjoying loads of awesome activities on the water. Many people will try to tell you that Labor Day is the end of summer fun, but those people are completely wrong! Late summer into fall is an excellent time to take advantage of all that the lake area has to offer.

Many of the waterfront attractions will remain open until the weather forces them to shut down, so you've still got a good couple of months to enjoy those. College kids and families with children in school will be busy, so there will be a lot less traffic on the water. In addition to those benefits, getting to see the colors change with the fall season is positively breathtaking.

Sun Protection Tips for Boating & the Warriors Against Melanoma Poker Run

The Warriors Against Melanoma Poker Run will be taking place across the Lake of the Ozarks on Saturday, August 13, 2016. You can enjoy an exciting day on the water, help raise money for an important cause, and learn a thing or two about protecting yourself from skin cancer. BomBay Boat Rental Co. has the poker run details for you, as well as a few tips to keep your skin safe while boating.

The Poker Run

Warriors Against Melanoma (WAM) is a non-profit organization that is run entirely by volunteers, and it was founded by a stage 3 melanoma survivor. The group's goal is to educate people about this deadly skin cancer and also raise money to help find effective treatments and eventually a cure.

We've got your Lake of the Ozarks boat rental waiting to be reserved for this awesome event. One of our locations, Dog Days Bar & Grill, is one of the poker stops, so you'll be all set to grab your first card! The run takes place from 11 am - 6 pm, with an after-party at 7 pm.

Once you're on the water, you just need to visit one of the stops to sign up for the poker run. There is a $20 donation per hand. You will get 1 card and 1 fact about skin cancer at each stop. If you are able to produce those facts at the after-party, they will give you a free bonus card for your poker hand. For even more details, visit www.WarriorsAgainstMelanoma.com. This year's stops include:

  • Dog Days Bar & Grill
  • Shorty Pants Lounge & Marina
  • Bulldog's Beach House Bar & Grill
  • Larry's on the Lake
  • Nautifish Rum Bar
  • Paradise Tropical Bar
  • Topsider Bar & Grill, featuring the after-party at 7 pm

Protect Your Skin While Boating

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. It is a cancerous growth that develops when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells triggers mutations. This is most often caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds.

Melanoma is not the most common skin cancer, but it does cause the most deaths. If recognized and treated early, a cure is very likely. WAM is working hard to make sure people are aware so that more deaths can be avoided. Examine your skin regularly, and have a doctor check it out yearly. You can find the warning signs to look for at www.SkinCancer.org.

There are precautions that you can take while out on the lake to keep your skin safe.
  • Wear sunscreen: A broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher should be worn when you will be outside for an extended time. Reapply it every couple of hours and after swimming or excessive sweating.
  • Cover your skin: A hat is excellent for keeping the sun off of your face and scalp. UPF(Ultraviolet Protection Factor) clothing is available that keeps a large amount of UV radiation from passing through it.
  • Protect your eyes: Sunglasses are a must. Polarized lenses work the best while boating to reduce glare from the water.
  • Stay in the shade: The sun is at it's strongest between 10 am - 4 pm. Staying in the shade helps, but be aware that the glare from the water can bounce those rays back up to you. Don't count on clouds for shade either. 80% of the sun's harmful UV rays can still come through, even on a cloudy day.
  • Don't let your skin burn: You don't have to burn to be at risk for skin cancer, but when you do, your chances increase.

Make plans to join in the fun of the Warriors Against Melanoma Poker Run on August 13, and while you're at it, make a plan to keep your skin safe while out on the water. BomBay Boat Rental Co. is ready to get you out there in one of our boat or jet ski rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we want you and your skin to be safe while you're cruising.
