7 Fun Facts About The Lake Of The Ozarks

The Lake of the Ozarks is a spectacular place to live, vacation and play. A paradise for midwesterners, young and old. This premier lake resort destination offers world-class boating, golfing, shopping and more. With a wide variety of lodging, restaurants and recreational activities there is truly something for everyone. The Lake of the Ozarks history is rich and over the years a bustling community of locals and visitors has evolved. BomBay Boat Rental Company loves "The Lake" and we're here to share some fun facts about the body of water that provides endless fun to our guests!

The Bagnell Dam
Over 20,000 men were employed to work 24 hours a day after construction of the dam began in 1929. It was completed 22 months later in 1931 and the total cost to build was approximately $30 million (nearly $360 million in today's money). The dam is 2,543 feel long and crosses the Osage River. 1.4 million gallons of water can be pumped through Bagnell Dam per second.

The Water
The Lake of the Ozarks covers 58,000 acres and contains 624 billion gallons of fresh water. The body of water is approximately 92 miles long and is home to a plethora of plant and animal life. The original purpose of damming the water supply was to supply electricity to St. Louis; when all the Bagnell dam floodgates are open, people love to watch the impressive amount of water roar through.

Tourism
Roughly 3.5 million tourists visit Lake of the Ozarks from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The Lake attracts millions of tourists who enjoy the abundance of water activities here. One can browse lodging options from camping to rustic cottages to major resort facilities. The on-and-off-water dining selection is vast and ranges from casual coastal dining to gourmet eateries and more. Wineries, golf courses and shopping hubs add to the appeal but boating remains one of the most enjoyed recreations at the Lake.

State Parks
At 17,741 acres, Lake of the Ozarks State Park is the largest park in Missouri. At the park you find public beaches, boat launches, campsites, hiking trails, horseback riding and much more. Ha Ha Tonka State Park is a must-see attraction at the Lake. This park contains more than 3,600 acres with 12 hiking trails, eight caves, picnic areas, playground, castle ruins rich in history, and more. 4.8 million gallons of water pump through the natural spring at Ha Ha Tonka each day. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the Lake of the Ozarks state parks.

Aquatic Trail
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources administered a 9 mile aquatic trail. Boaters will enjoy a two-hour excursion that runs from Public Beach No.1 to Grand Glaize Beach (located within the Lake of the Ozarks State Park). A map and more information is available at the park office. Once launched, participants on the trail will see everything from a logging chute, caves, and more natural beauty of the  Lake of the Ozarks.

Healthy & Clean
The Lake of the Ozarks is one of the cleanest lakes in the Midwest. It is tested on a regular basis to ensure that its water quality is not only safe for the people using it, but also healthy and vibrant for the fish and plant life that live in the lake. 700+ volunteers take part in spring and fall shoreline clean up.

Boating & Fishing
The Lake of the Ozarks is a hotspot for water lovers, both local and out-of-towners, and offers relaxation for boaters and anglers. For homeowners with boats and visitors who choose to rent their watercraft, the towering bluffs and forested natural shorelines provide a beautiful backdrop for fun on the water.
