Tips for Packing Your Cooler for Labor Day Weekend

The summer finale is here - and while we’re sad to see Summer 2017 end, we’re not done yet! BomBay Boat Rental has the best boats at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we want YOU to have a great time during your holiday weekend. There are a few common themes that surround holiday weekends at the Lake: food and boats. You need both in order to have a properly successful weekend! We have the boats, and we have some cool info for you about how to pack your cooler for the most efficient snacks on your boat outing!

Tips for Packing Your Cooler

You’ll be out on the boat all day long, and in order to make the day perfect, you’ll want to have snacks on board. The goal will be to make sure that your food stays cold, organized, dry, and un-squished (you know those hot dog buns we’re talking about … ). One idea you may want to consider depending on the number of people that will be on board your boat is bringing two coolers, one for drinks and one for food. Even if you can’t bring two, though, here are a few tips to help you pack like a pro!

1. Keep It Cold

Ice blocks will stay colder a lot longer than ice cubes, to do a little bit of preparation and freeze some blocks ahead of time. You can also use larger ice packs, or canteens filled three-quarters full and frozen flat. You’ll want to pre-chill all of your food and your drinks, as they’ll help the ice stay cold. If you have anything that can stay frozen ahead of time, do it, and your cooler will stay cold longer.

2. Think Like a Grocery Bagger

If it’s fragile, put it on top. Bread, lettuce, tomatoes, or fruit. You’ll also want to stash lost items in a plastic tote - this would include items like ketchup, bags of meats and cheeses, and anything else that you don’t want to lose in the ice, then seal the tote with a lid.

The ice blocks will go on the bottom of the cooler, along with any other heavy items like meat (if you’re going to stop somewhere and grill out), boxes of cut up fruit, etc.

As you start layering, fill in the empty spaces with ice cubes.

3. Use Your Space Wisely

One thing that will waste space fast is excess packaging. Fill an empty jar with ketchup so that you don’t have to bring the whole bottle, and if you have prepackaged items that are large and bulky, consider downsizing them to a smaller Tupperware.

4. Keep Things Organized and DRY

It’s important to seal meats, cheese, and eggs in plastic bags. Foods will stay dry even when the ice starts to melt a bit. You’ll also want to label everything. You can mark containers with masking tape and a Sharpie, that way everyone will be able to help themselves to the food and nothing will end up “mystery meat.”

5. Keep the Cooler in the Shade

Finally, you’ll want to keep the cooler where it won’t be in the sun. The more sun it gets, the faster your ice will melt. In fact, the ice will last TWICE as long in the shade!

What YOU Need to Know About Fishing In Missouri

August is National Fishing Month, and we would be remiss if we didn't take some time out of the month to celebrate it! There are, obviously, certain rules that pertain to fishing on our Lake, and whether you're a resident or not, you are required to abide by the rules. As the best boat rental company at the Lake of the Ozarks, we have many customers to come to us to rent a boat so they can fish off of it and enjoy all that the Lake has to offer - whether they are beginners or avid fishermen. Here are a few things YOU need to know about the Missouri fishing license, and rules of the water.

Do You Need a Fishing Permit?

Basically, if you want to fish on the lake, you must have the appropriate lifetime, annual, or daily fishing permit. The only reason you wouldn't is if you qualify for an exemption. If you think you may qualify for an exemption, you can visit the Missouri Department of Conservation website to learn more. Here is what the MDC states on their website for those who to NOT need a lifetime, annual, or daily fishing permit (however, they must purchase a daily trou fishing tag or trout permit when or where required):
  • Any Missouri resident landowner and resident lessee of land, and all members of their immediate households, when fishing on the land they own or on which they lease and reside
  • Any Missouri resident (whether or not meeting the definition of a landowner) who owns land that completely encloses a body of water, or any member of his or her immediate household, when fishing in those waters
  • Any Missouri resident 65 years of age or older
  • Any person (resident or nonresident) 15 years of age or younger. Note: Youngsters fishing without a permit are limited to the following methods: pole and line, gig, bow, crossbow, snaring, grabbing, and snagging.
  • Any Missouri resident with a visual acuity not exceeding 20/200 in the better eye with maximum correction, or having 20 degree or less field of visual concentric contraction. Must carry a certified statement of eligibility from a licensed ophthalmologist, optometrist, or physician
  • Any Missouri resident who is so severely and permanently disabled as to be unable to move freely without the aid of a wheelchair. Must carry a certified statement of eligibility from a licensed physician
  • Any Missouri resident with cerebral palsy or mental retardation as defined in Missouri Revised Statutes, section 630.005, and who is so severely disabled that he or she cannot fish alone. Must be accompanied by a licensed adult angler and possess a certified statement of eligibility from a licensed physician qualified to evaluate and treat the developmentally disabled
  • Any resident or nonresident who is an honorably discharged veteran who has a service-related disability of 60 percent or greater, or who was a prisoner of war during military service. Must carry a certified statement of eligibility from the Veterans Administration
This info was taken directly from the Missouri Department of Conservation's website, you can see the rest of the article here

Rules That Apply to Your License

When you accept a fishing permit, you are agreeing that you will abide by the rules of the Wildlife Code of Missouri, will not lend your permit to anyone, will allow your permit, picture ID, catch, and equipment to be inspected by an agent of the Conservation Department, and will carry your permit while you are fishing. If you ordered your permit by phone or online, but have not received it, you must carry the permit authorization number and picture ID with you while you are fishing until it does arrive.

Fishing and Boating at the Lake of the Ozarks

We LOVE when our customers come back from a day on the water with successful fishing stories and showing off their catch. From kids to adults alike, there's nothing better than telling a good (slightly exaggerated *wink*) fishing story - even if it WAS the one that got away. Take some time to get your fishing permit this month for National Fishing Month, and don't forget to rent a fishing boat at the Lake of the Ozarks from BomBay Boat Rental!

20 Things to Pack on a Boat Outing

Every boat outing needs a few specific things to make it a successful trip. Think about it, if you left the dock without things like your anchor or sunglasses, you could survive, but it certainly wouldn't be as great of a trip. Likewise, there are a few things you can bring along with you that aren't vital, but certainly, add to the success of the day! Better yet, keep many of these items in a boat bag or with your cooler so that when you're ready to head out on your boat rental at the Lake of the Ozarks, you can just grab and go. Here are our top 20 suggestions to keep handy when you head out on the boat.

Boat Day Checklist

If you are renting a boat at the Lake of the Ozarks, you obviously can't store these items on your boat, so you'll want to create a bag or pack that has all of the items you need. If you keep everything together, you won't have to think twice about an impromptu day trip on the Lake! Here are a few items we suggest keeping in your bag and why:

Boat License
In the state of Missouri, you have to have a boating license in order to operate a boat, even if you are just renting. Make sure you either keep this with your boating supplies or in your wallet so you'll have it.

Waterproof Camera
Sure, most people just use their cell phones, but sometimes it might be nice to have a camera that is waterproof for capturing memories. Plus, a waterproof camera can be a lot easier to replace than your cell phone if it falls in the water.

Cell Phone or Marine Radio
If something happens, you'll be thankful for a way to contact someone. Just make sure that your cell phone is either in a waterproof case, or you have a waterproof bag for it.

Change of Clothes
Whether you're planning on getting wet or not, having a change of clothes in a zip lock bag can be a huge relief if you want to wear something dry half way through the day.

First Aid Kit
Accidents happen, but that doesn't mean you can't be prepared for them!

Fishing License
You can keep this with your boating license so that you always have it when you need it. You are required to have a fishing license in Missouri, so make sure you know the rules and are following them.

Hand Sanitizer or Wipes
After handling bait, fish, or anything else you may find on your boat outing, it can be nice to have a way to clean up.

Wide-Brimmed Hat
When the sun comes out, you'll be thankful for this little addition in your boat bag.

Insect Repellent
If you have a pulse, you're a target for those pesky bugs! Keep some insect repellent on hand to protect yourself from their bites.

Chapstick
Did you know that even your lips can be burned from the sun? Chapstick can help protect them.

Motion Sickness Pills
Even if you aren't at risk of getting sick, your passengers could be. There are many different types and styles on the market, so find what works best and keep it on hand.

Non-Perishable Snacks
Granola bars, peanut butter crackers, and anything that won't melt in the heat of being out all day are great snacks to keep on hand for if you get hungry.

Rain Gear
The weather can change at a moments notice, so keeping a few rain ponchos in your kit will help ensure that you are prepared.

Sunglasses
Forget your favorite pair at home? Don't worry! If you put a spare in your boat bag, you'll always be able to protect your eyes.

Sunscreen
When you're out on the water, you have very few places to hide from the sun, so you'll want to have proper protection in the form of sunscreen.

Light Jacket or Sweatshirt
Because the weather is so unpredictable, you may as well be prepared for sudden coolness throughout the day. A light jacket should be just enough to keep you from freezing if a breeze comes.

Towels
Even if you aren't planning on getting wet during your boat trip - accidents (or kids with water guns ... ) happen!

Distress Signals
Visual Distress Signals are imperative. You may be able to travel on the water for years without needing one, but when you do need it, you'll be glad that you have it.

Water Bottles
You'll want to have enough water for everyone on the boat, and for the length of time that you'll be out. That can look different for every boat trip, and obviously can't fit in your bag, but you'll want to have it just in case.

Airtight Cooler
Every good boat trip needs something to keep the food cold!

Pack a Boat Snack!

There are still 50 days left of summer - and we know just how you can enjoy them! Renting a boat at the Lake of the Ozarks can be a fun way to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, and spend some time on the water. Of course, no boat outing is complete without the perfect boat snacks! Here are a few delicious recipes to keep in mind next time you head out on your next BomBay Boat Rental outing.

5 Boat Snacks to Pack

Getting hungry on the boat in obvious, so make sure you pack plenty of snacks for the day. Here are some easy snacks you can make before you head out.

Salad in a Cup

Looking for a healthy option? Or even just a chilled option? Salads are a great choice for your boat day, but they normally involve lots of cutlery, and are always sliding off of the plates - not anymore! Here is an easy recipe for salad in a cup by Lifestyle For Real Life. To make it even better, when you put your salad in the plastic cup, you have a handy little hole in the top for your fork!

Ingredients

1-2 T Your Favorite Salad Dressing
3 Sweet Peas Cut to Bite Size Pieces
3-4 Mini Bell Peppers Cut to Bite Size Pieces
1 T Black olives Sliced
2 T Chick Peas
1 T Goat Cheese Crumbled
2 T Dried Cranberries
2 T Slivered Almonds
1 c Salad Greens Spinach, Romaine, or your favorite

Instructions

Pour your salad dressing into the bottom of the cup.
Add the denser vegetables, like Sweet Peas and Mini Bell Peppers, first.
Add the cheese.
Add the olives, chick peas, dried cranberries and slivered almonds.
Add the lettuce last. Do not over pack the salad. You need a little room for the ingredients to move around in the next step.
When you are ready to eat the salad, shake it until the dressing is evenly distributed.

To Go Cold Cuts Hawaiin Rolls

Sandwiches are easily one of the fastest ways to feed a group on the boat - but this fun recipe makes it even FASTER! Not to mention, easy to transport. Of course, if you love Hawaiin Rolls, you'll love this recipe from Easy Peasy Pleasy even more!

5 - Minute Dill Pickle Chex Mix

Craving a fast snack to munch on while on your boat? Here is a fun spin off on the Chex Mix we have all come to love from Averie Cooks.

Ingredients

4 cups corn Chex
4 cups Rice Chex
2 cups mini pretzels
2 cups lightly crushed pita chips (bagel chips may be substituted)
1/2 cup canola or vegetable oil
5 to 6 tablespoons dill pickle juice
2 tablespoons dried dill (you can always start with 1 tablespoon and add more to taste)
one 1-ounce packet dry ranch seasoning and salad dressing mix

Instructions

To a very large microwave-safe bowl, add the corn Chex, rice Chex, pretzels, pita chips (I crush them in my hands), and stir to combine; set aside.
To a glass measuring cup or small bowl, add the oil, pickle juice, dried dill, and stir to combine.
Evenly pour the wet over the dry ingredients; stir well to combine.
Evenly sprinkle the ranch mix; stir well to combine.
Cook in the microwave on high power for 5 minutes. Stop every minute to stir well, scraping the sides of the bowl with a spatula if necessary.
Turn mixture out onto a large baking sheet to cool. My mixture was quite dry after the five 1-minute cycles in the microwave but if yours isn't, it will dry out as time passes if exposed to air. Mix will keep for up to 1 week in an airtight container.SaveSave

Turkey Roll-Ups

Cold quick snacks are always a must when you're out on the boat, and roll ups match all of the criteria. Not to mention they are a tasty way to enjoy sandwich materials without having to bring fragile sandwiches. Check out this easy recipe from Culinary Hill.

Ingredients

8 ounces cream cheese softened
¼ cup whole berry cranberry sauce
8 (10-inch) flour tortillas
½ head romaine or green leaf lettuce torn into 4-inch pieces
16 slices deli turkey
16 slices Havarti or Swiss cheese halved
2 medium tomatoes halved and sliced

Instructions

In a small bowl, mix cream cheese with cranberry sauce until uniformly combined.
Lay out one tortilla and spread a thick layer of cream cheese all the way to the edges. In the middle of the tortilla, layer 3 lettuce leaves down the middle of the tortilla.
Next, layer two slices of turkey and 4 pieces of Swiss cheese on top of the lettuce. Top with several slices of tomatoes.
Starting at one end of the tortilla, roll tightly towards the filling. Continue rolling until the filling is tightly wrapped and the cream cheese holds the roll-up together.
Continue with the remaining tortillas until all have been assembled. Wrap each tortilla roll-up tightly in plastic wrap.
Chill the wrapped roll-ups in the refrigerator until serving time. To serve, slice each tortilla into 8 pieces and play on a platter or tray.

Fruit Kabobs

Finally, add some sweetness to your boating menu with fruit kabobs. They are perfect for a day on the water because you don't need silverware for them, and fruit is refreshing as well as hydrating (ideal when you're on the water all day in the sun!).

There really isn't much to this recipe, you just choose your favorite fruits, cut them if necessary, and slide them onto the kabobs. Make sure to put them in a plastic container so they aren't at risk for being squished in the cooler.

3 Advantages of Renting a Boat

At BomBay Boat Rental, we know how important it is to find a way out on the water, but for many - that doesn't seem possible. If you don't own a boat, don't worry, we have you covered! Owning a boat can be expensive and a lot of upkeep and work. When you rent a boat, you can easily get out on the water worry free. Don't believe us? Here are three advantages that you can experience when renting a boat with the best boat rental company at the Lake of the Ozarks.

No Maintenance
Yes, you read that right! When you rent a boat at the Lake of the Ozarks, you won't have to do ANY maintenance. Your boat will be ready to pickup for delivery in tip shop shape. If something out of the ordinary were to happen while you're on the water, we're just a quick phone call away and it will be made right - AND your boating adventure doesn't have to end. You won't have to winterize your boat, you don't have to make sure that the oil is changed regularly, and you don't even have to make sure that trailer is in good shape - because you don't need one.

Cost Effective
When you consider that fact that we have a very reasonable boat rental membership at the Lake of the Ozarks, that in itself makes renting a boat more cost effective. Not to mention that you don't have to provide any of the maintenance or repairs. Plus, you won't have a buy a special vehicle just for hauling your boat. Another cost effective benefit to consider is that when you rent a boat with us, you are getting a BRAND NEW 2017 boat. You aren't getting the old vintage boat that you took out as a kid (that's still being held together with duct tape!), or even a boat that is two or three years old. You are getting a brand new model that is ready to ride. Taking a brand new boat out has never been so affordable!

More Fun

We know you may not believe us, but it really is more fun when you rent a boat. You don't have to plan your day around when and where to get your boat from your dock or marina slip. At BomBay Boat Rental we will deliver your boat directly to your vacation rental dock, or you can pick it up at one of our three locations. Taking Out a Jet Ski!

There are only two important words you need to remember for the next few weeks: Summer vacation. These two words play a huge role in your kids lives (and probably yours, too). Don’t let your kids waste the summer away stuck and home playing video games and watching television. Help get active in their lives by getting them outside enjoying the sunshine and having a wildly good time, as well. It’s time to rent a Lake of the Ozarks jet ski from Bombay Boat Rental. Here are a few reasons you should consider a jet ski for your next outdoor adventure.

You Can Teach Fun

There’s nothing more fun that racing across the water with your family on a couple of jet skis. You can explore the Lake of the Ozarks, take in the scenery, and enjoy quality time together as a family. Not to mention, you can race across the Lake and see who wins: guys vs. girls, of course. Teach your kids how to have fun by renting a jet ski at the Lake of the Ozarks and taking it out for an afternoon or even a whole day! We have three convenient locations, and can even drop the watercraft off for you - it’s truly that simple.

You Can Teach Responsibility

Every time you take your kids out to do something, you’re teaching them about responsibility. You can show them how it’s important to carry the right documents while riding on the jet ski, and obeying the rules of the water. Boating Safety Tips for Your Boat Rental

Summer is finally upon us, and the only GREAT way to enjoy it is by getting out on the water for a fun weekend! Yet, if you don't have a boat, how are you going to cruise across the water's surface? By renting a boat at the Lake of the Ozarks, of course! At BomBay Boat Rental, we provide the best watercraft rental at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we want YOU to have an amazing time out on the lake. There are a few things you can do ahead of time, though, to make sure your trip is not only fun but safe as well. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind when you rent your boat.

Be Prepared

You can never be over-prepared when planning for your boating adventure. If you have no experience with the boat you'll be piloting, you can watch some online videos to get up to speed on the technology that is aboard the craft. You also want to make sure you are familiar with the Lake of the Ozarks before getting out on the water. We have a HUGE lake with many twists and turns, with many coves to chill out in and main channels to cruise, if you aren't familiar with the lake, it can be easy to get turned around. Make sure you have maps either saved to your phone or bring along paper copies.

Choose Your Boat Carefully

By choosing a boat you are familiar with operating, you can save yourself some hardship. We have two boats to choose from, a ski boat and a tritoon. Both are easy to operate, but if you are more familiar with one over the other, that may be an easy way to make your choice.

Know the Rules of the Water

In order to keep everyone safe, the water patrol is always out to make sure that everyone is following the rules. Don't be caught off guard by not knowing what the rules are when you're out on the water. Different states have different rules, so even if you are aware of the rules in your home state, they could be different than the ones we have here. A quick Google search should be able to help you learn what you can and cannot do while out on the water and help avoid unnecessary penalties to ruin your outing.

Check the Insurance and File a Float Plan

When renting a boat from a company, you need to make sure that you are aware of the insurance involved. It will provide peace of mind knowing that you are covered and protected. You should also file a float plan to let others know where you'll be going. You can include information about where you are departing from and where you'll be, and keep emergency contacts close by.

Are you ready to rent your boat and head out to the Lake for a fun weekend? We're ready to serve you!
