20 Things to Pack on a Boat Outing

Every boat outing needs a few specific things to make it a successful trip. Think about it, if you left the dock without things like your anchor or sunglasses, you could survive, but it certainly wouldn't be as great of a trip. Likewise, there are a few things you can bring along with you that aren't vital, but certainly, add to the success of the day! Better yet, keep many of these items in a boat bag or with your cooler so that when you're ready to head out on your boat rental at the Lake of the Ozarks, you can just grab and go. Here are our top 20 suggestions to keep handy when you head out on the boat.

Boat Day Checklist

If you are renting a boat at the Lake of the Ozarks, you obviously can't store these items on your boat, so you'll want to create a bag or pack that has all of the items you need. If you keep everything together, you won't have to think twice about an impromptu day trip on the Lake! Here are a few items we suggest keeping in your bag and why:

Boat License
In the state of Missouri, you have to have a boating license in order to operate a boat, even if you are just renting. Make sure you either keep this with your boating supplies or in your wallet so you'll have it.

Waterproof Camera
Sure, most people just use their cell phones, but sometimes it might be nice to have a camera that is waterproof for capturing memories. Plus, a waterproof camera can be a lot easier to replace than your cell phone if it falls in the water.

Cell Phone or Marine Radio
If something happens, you'll be thankful for a way to contact someone. Just make sure that your cell phone is either in a waterproof case, or you have a waterproof bag for it.

Change of Clothes
Whether you're planning on getting wet or not, having a change of clothes in a zip lock bag can be a huge relief if you want to wear something dry half way through the day.

First Aid Kit
Accidents happen, but that doesn't mean you can't be prepared for them!

Fishing License
You can keep this with your boating license so that you always have it when you need it. You are required to have a fishing license in Missouri, so make sure you know the rules and are following them.

Hand Sanitizer or Wipes
After handling bait, fish, or anything else you may find on your boat outing, it can be nice to have a way to clean up.

Wide-Brimmed Hat
When the sun comes out, you'll be thankful for this little addition in your boat bag.

Insect Repellent
If you have a pulse, you're a target for those pesky bugs! Keep some insect repellent on hand to protect yourself from their bites.

Chapstick
Did you know that even your lips can be burned from the sun? Chapstick can help protect them.

Motion Sickness Pills
Even if you aren't at risk of getting sick, your passengers could be. There are many different types and styles on the market, so find what works best and keep it on hand.

Non-Perishable Snacks
Granola bars, peanut butter crackers, and anything that won't melt in the heat of being out all day are great snacks to keep on hand for if you get hungry.

Rain Gear
The weather can change at a moments notice, so keeping a few rain ponchos in your kit will help ensure that you are prepared.

Sunglasses
Forget your favorite pair at home? Don't worry! If you put a spare in your boat bag, you'll always be able to protect your eyes.

Sunscreen
When you're out on the water, you have very few places to hide from the sun, so you'll want to have proper protection in the form of sunscreen.

Light Jacket or Sweatshirt
Because the weather is so unpredictable, you may as well be prepared for sudden coolness throughout the day. A light jacket should be just enough to keep you from freezing if a breeze comes.

Towels
Even if you aren't planning on getting wet during your boat trip - accidents (or kids with water guns ... ) happen!

Distress Signals
Visual Distress Signals are imperative. You may be able to travel on the water for years without needing one, but when you do need it, you'll be glad that you have it.

Water Bottles
You'll want to have enough water for everyone on the boat, and for the length of time that you'll be out. That can look different for every boat trip, and obviously can't fit in your bag, but you'll want to have it just in case.

Airtight Cooler
Every good boat trip needs something to keep the food cold!
