Winter Fishing at the Lake of the Ozarks

If you love spending time on the Lake of the Ozarks, rain or shine, then you might find it difficult getting through the winter without your water fix. BomBay Boat Rental Company knows how you feel - we're already counting down the days until we re-open March 1st, 2017. 72 days in fact, and we couldn't be more excited to begin renting the best watercrafts at the Lake of the Ozarks. In the meantime, we've got a few fishing suggestions for our winter fishing friends - don't let the cold deter you from enjoying our lake for fishing this winter.

January and February Fishing

As December winds down and you gear up for the new year, you can look forward to some excellent fishing. Many feel that cold temperatures in January and February are a deterrent to catching fish, but according to BassingBob.com, it's actually one of the best times of the year to catch fish. There are big fish just waiting to bite your bait and all you've got to do is cast! Winter water temperatures at the Lake of the Ozarks average between the mid-30s and low to mid-40s, making conditions great for bass fishing. Anglers are well suited to fish the lower end of the lake this time of year, where the water is clearer and generally warmer.

Here's your BassingBob.com fishing expert tip: The trick to successful bass fishing during January and February really comes down to three baits. Jerk baits, jigs and the Alabama rig. Once your rod is ready, head for the channel banks, secondary points, bluff ends, and transition banks. You've got to find the fish to hook and reel them in!

Additionally, January and February are unique because, you have the opportunity to catch crappie on the same baits that are used to catch bass. You may find that big crappie gather in schools during this time of year, making catching a limit of large crappie not just doable, but common.

Upcoming Fishing Tournaments

There are several fishing tournaments coming up over the next couple of months. Even if you don't participate, it can be a lot of fun visiting the weigh-ins and checking out the fish the competitors pull in. Check out BassingBob.com for more information.

4th Annual Winter Bass Challenge January 7, 21 and February 4, 2017
Open to individuals who are ready to have a great fishing experience and 90% of the entry fees as the cash prize. Fishing takes place from 8 AM to 3:30 PM (weigh-in). If you're ready to participate, the entry fee is $125.00 per boat and you can submit this online or by mail. Weather permitting this is sure to be a great tournament!

For all things fishing at the Lake of the Ozarks, BassingBob.com is you location for professional tips, latest fishing reports, bait information, and more. We hope you've enjoyed some great tips for enjoying Lake of the Ozarks fishing for leisure as well as competition. BomBay  Boat Rental Company is already looking forward to another great season of boat and waverunner rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks, but until then, we want our lake area friends to enjoy the water as much as possible. Have fun fishing and good luck!

Next time you find yourself ready to rent one of the best rental boats on the lake we want you to be prepared. Whether you're interested in learning boat terminology because you want to increase your nautical knowledge or you want to impress your friends as you captain them through the water, there are so many things to study when it comes to boating. Before venturing out into open waters, it's important to have a basic understanding of common boat terms associated with the positions and directions of your boat. We want to make sure that you have the best experience possible on your boating journey, so take a look at our list of basic boating terms.

Common Boating Terms

12. Cockpit

The cockpit is the space somewhere behind the helm where people can gather.

13. Bow line

An inboard motor is a motor that is inside of the vessel.

15. Outboard Motor

An outboard motor is a motor that is outside of the vessel. It is attached to the transom. The transom is the flat part of the stern, or back, of the boat.

Enjoying the Outdoors at The Lake of the Ozarks

It happens every year as we enter November. The cool, crisp air brings people out of doors to enjoy the warm sunshine as they gravitate toward their favorite fall hobbies. The Lake of the Ozarks is host to some of the best summer activities the Midwest has to offer, but we want to share why our area is just as fun in the fall. As a result of the unusually warm weather, BomBay Boat Rental Company has had an extended season, still renting boats into November! This weekend is no exception as the forecast predicts 70 degrees - give us a call and reserve your watercraft, we're waiting for you! If you want to get outside but prefer to keep your feet planted on the ground, grab your sneakers and head outside - there's plenty to do!

Fishing

Looking for that catch of the day? It may be getting cold outside but the fishing around the Lake of the Ozarks is heating up - note, the increase of bass boats flying up and down and in and out of coves. Time to pack that fishing gear and head down to the dock (or out in a BomBay boat) and start casting. You may find that the bass are feeding near the surface or in the shallow sections of the lake. Your "big bass" may be out there, good luck!

Hunting

Locals and visitors alike find the woods and fields around the Lake of the Ozarks to be filled with a wide variety of wild game this fall. During the designated seasons, you'll be able to test your skill and fill the freezer, if that's something you enjoy. If hunting is your hobby, the fall is a great time to look for that trophy buck, turkey and other migratory birds.

Hiking and Biking

The Lake of the Ozarks is a great place to discover nature by foot or tire! There are 12 hiking trails at Ha Ha Tonka State Park and 11 trails at Lake of the Ozarks State Park. Take in the serene, natural characteristics of the Ozarks as you walk or ride your bike around the area.
