6 Must-Know Tubing Safety Tips

Tubing is a great activity that can make your day on the water an even more fun and adventurous experience! Boating at the Lake of the Ozarks is already incredibly fun, but when you add the thrill of riding behind the boat on a tube, it's hard to beat! One thing that BomBay Boat Rental Company knows is that tubing is a blast. But we also know it can be dangerous if you are not prepared. Keep reading to learn about safety precautions you should take when tubing at the Lake of the Ozarks.

1) Get Familiar with the Equipment

When tubing, it is very important that the rope and tube you are using are in good condition. If the rope is worn or the tube has a tear, things could go wrong very quickly while out on the water. BomBay Boat Rental always makes sure that our watercraft are in excellent condition, but the tube you use will be your responsibility. Check the weight limit and capacity of the tube you are using before going out on the water. And make sure the line is secure before you take off.

2) Follow the Rules

There are a lot of special rules about how you should and should not use a tube while boating in Missouri. To find a list of Missouri boating laws, check out this website: www.boat-ed.com.

3) Watch Your Surroundings

The Lake of the Ozarks is a very busy place, especially on weekends and even more so on holidays. If you plan on tubing this weekend, it will be very important for you to keep an eye on your surroundings. Double-check that your rider is ready before taking off, or they could get left behind or injured. Watch out for other boat or jet ski drivers that may not be paying attention. Sometimes it can be difficult for people to see a tow line and tube until it's too late.

4) Designate a Spotter

It is incredibly important to have someone dedicated to watching behind the boat to make sure the tuber is safe and still riding. If the rider should fall off the tube into the lake, it is the spotter's responsibility to raise the orange alert flag and notify the driver. The flag indicates to other boaters nearby that someone is overboard and to drive carefully when passing by. This will help keep your riders safe while tubing.

5) Take Your Rider into Consideration

Tubing can be a rough water sport with the amount of jostling from wakes and water spraying in your face while you ride. It's important to take your rider's experience into consideration when tubing. A 30-year-old man who is strong and good at swimming can probably take a faster speed and sharper turns than a 10-year-old boy who may not be good at swimming.

6) Wear a Life Jacket!

Even if your rider is a gold medal Olympic swimmer, it's important that they wear a life jacket while tubing. It's hard to know how you will react when thrown from a tube into the Lake until it happens. You may be too surprised and disoriented to find the right direction to swim to the surface without a life jacket. It can also get extremely rough and choppy at the Lake of the Ozarks when the water traffic is high. Some of the wakes can be incredibly large and hard to manage without the support and buoyancy of a life jacket.

Tubing Safety Tips!

Fall is almost here but that doesn't mean that boating season is over just yet! The weather is still warm and fall is a perfect time of year for boating. Since there are far fewer boats out on the water, fall is an excellent time of year to go tubing! Tubing is a lot of fun for all ages.

The best way to ensure everyone has fun while they are out having fun on the water is to always keep safety top of mind. That's why today, our boat rental company at the Lake of the Ozarks has a few safety tips to consider when tubing.

ALWAYS wear a life jacket.

This is the number one rule for safety when you are on any body of water. The Lake of the Ozarks has a lot of boating traffic on it in the summer. There is always a good chance of getting bounced off of the tube and separated from the boat. The PDF will keep you safely above water until you can be picked up.

Know the equipment.

Double and triple-check that the equipment you are using is in good shape. BomBay Boat Rental Company makes sure our watercraft are always in tip-top shape, but the tube is your responsibility. Know the manufacturer's recommendations for the tube you are using regarding capacity and safe speeds. Make sure that the tow line is secure before you take off. Replace it if it appears worn or frayed.

Know the rules.

Get familiar with the water safety regulations for the area that you are in. You can find out about all of Missouri's boating laws at www.boat-ed.com.

Know each rider's skill level.

Be fully aware of the expertise of each person riding the tube. It's fun to go fast, make sharp turns, and make the experience into a true thrill ride, but if the person riding is too young or inexperienced to handle it, accidents will happen.

Have a designated spotter.

At least one designated person should keep watch over the people on the tube at all times to alert the driver of any problems. The captain needs to keep their eyes and minds on driving the boat.

Watch your surroundings.

Never take off until you are positive that the rider is ready. They should have a firm grip on the line, be in a position to ride, and the line should be safely positioned. Keep a close eye on everyone else in the water around your area, both other boats and people in the water. Slow the boat when you cross a wake. Tubes hitting and bouncing off of wakes at high speeds have been known to cause back injuries.
