BroStock - May 29-30

The contest starts on Friday, running from 2 pm- 7 pm.  Saturday the top 10 go back at it at noon, and the top 5 will finish up the day with the finals starting at 2:30.  An after-party at Captain Ron's is planned for 6 pm.  For all of the information and activities, go to www.brostock.com.

Lake Race - June 5-7

This exciting event brings powerboat racing to the Lake of the Ozarks.  Friday, June 5, the Bagnell Dam Strip will turn into Race Village. You can meet the race teams and see the boats up close. A Lake Race Street Party begins at 6 pm, and at 8:30 pm the Patrick Lentz Band from Kansas City will be performing outside.

The honorary chairman will take the ceremonious first lap at 11:30 am on Saturday, followed by the opening ceremony at 11:55, and then the races begin.  It all wraps up around 4 pm, but will start back up on Sunday from noon - 4 pm.  The event concludes with an awards ceremony at 5:30 pm at Beavers at the Dam. 4 Myths About Our Very Own Lake of the Ozarks

When you take out one of our boat rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks, you are in for a fun-filled adventure on the water.  While you are cruising in one of our Lake of the Ozarks watercraft rentals, do you ever take a minute to think about what may be under that water? Deep below the surface, too far for the eye to see?
If you believe everything that you hear, then this might be too creepy for you to continue reading.  If you love a good tall tale and the mysteries that surround them, then here are a few about the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks.

1. Giant catfish at the bottom of the lake.

People love to tell stories about the giant, man-eating catfish at the bottom of the Lake of the Ozarks, usually near Bagnell Dam.  They say that the Dam cannot be inspected because the divers will be eaten by these monsters!

Don't worry, this one is NOT true, and the Dam IS inspected regularly.   The largest fish found in this area is the paddlefish, and they don't even eat meat. The largest catfish ever caught in the Lake of the Ozarks (on record) was 103 pounds.  Big, but not big enough to swallow a man.

If you still want to believe in these giant catfish, I did come across a story that said there used to be the Missouri Aquarium on the Bagnell Dam Strip, and it featured a 5-foot long catfish that they claimed was caught in the Lake of the Ozarks.  Even scarier, it had bite marks around it's middle!  I couldn't find any proof of this, but it sure is a good story to make me want to keep looking deeper.

2. Dozens of towns were flooded out of existence when the Dam filled the lake.

Once Bagnell Dam was completed in 1931 and Lake of the Ozarks began filling up, rumors say that dozens of town sites were flooded and lost underwater.

This is also NOT true. The only town back then that was actually large enough to be considered a real town was old Linn Creek.  The others were really just made up of a building or two, or a few cabins.  Linn Creek was completely relocated, and all other "towns" were abandoned, and any large buildings were demolished.

Technically, 8 town sites were truly flooded, 4 were no longer in existence by 1931, and 11 were at a high enough elevation that they were not actually covered by the water.  In actuality, NO towns were flooded that still existed.

3. A church steeple peeks just about the waves when the lake is low.

Of the many people that tell the story of a church steeple peeking out of the water, most of them can never remember exactly where it was that they saw it. At least one person stated seeing this at Linn Creek Cove.

Old Linn Creek was relocated, as told above, and old photos show 3 churches in that town.  After everything was either moved to the new Linn Creek or demolished, photos show that nothing taller than a man's head was left in the old town. Definitely not a church steeple tall enough to peek out of the filled lake.

One possibility is an optical illusion.  From a distance, some things like a lighthouse in the area, can look like they are jutting out of the water, but when you get closer to it, it's actually on dry land.  Another possibility is suggestive thinking from stories like this combined with a few adult beverages.

4. There are grave sites underneath the Lake of the Ozarks.

There were 60 cemeteries and possibly 2800 graves in the area before Bagnell Dam was constructed.  Union Electric created 8 brand new cemeteries to relocate the graves to.  The problem was, back then not all graves were clearly marked.  Many had small, family burial spots that were marked with a rock, a tree, or some other kind of marker that only family members might be aware of. Every effort was made to move all of the graves before flooding the dam, but there is a very good possibility that a few may have been missed.

So what do you think?  Just a bunch of tall tales, or are you interested enough to look into this a little further?  True or not, it does add another aspect to the excitement that is the Lake of the Ozarks.  Come on over to BomBay Boat Rental Company, take out one of our boats or jet skis, and do a little research of your own.

Staying Safe on the Lake on a PWC

If you have never experienced driving a PWC (personal watercraft) on the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks, then you are missing an amazing day on the water!  BomBay Boat Rentals offers the most fun jet ski rental on the Lake of the Ozarks:  our Sea-Doo GTI 130.  Not only does it have the most fuel-efficient engine out there (meaning less gas for you to buy), but it's also easy-to-ride, so even beginners can have a great time in no time.

To guarantee that you have the best day ever on the water, it's extremely important that you keep yourself and those around you safe.  Here are a few wave runner safety tips to guarantee that you are around to play another day.

TOP 10 TIPS FOR WAVE RUNNER SAFETY:
  1. Always wear a coast guard approved life jacket.
    • This will keep your head above water in case of an accident.  It's also a good idea to attach a whistle to your vest so that you can summon help and alert other boat traffic that you are in the water.
  2. Always keep the safety lanyard attached to you.
    • If you fall off, the key attached to the safety lanyard will come with you so that the engine will stop.  Forget to do this and you could end up with a long swim to shore!
  3. Stay at least 150 feet away from boats and other PWCs.
    • PWCs (and boats) do NOT have brakes.  Your best offense is to drive defensively.  Stay aware of your surroundings and take action early if you need to avoid a collision or come to a stop.
  4. Use the buddy system.
    • Keep an eye on each other so that you can act quickly if the other rider is in need of assistance.  If you must ride alone, it is wise to keep your home base in sight.
  5. Keep an eye on your gas level.
    • If you run out of gas, you are stuck until help arrives to tow you in.
  6. Have a cell phone with you.
    • In the event that you do run out of gas, or get stuck in any other way, it is wise to have a cell phone with you to call for help.  Waterproof cell phone cases/containers are available to keep your phone dry.
  7. Keep away from the intake grate.
    • Loose items, such as long hair, clothing, PFD straps..., can get caught in the moving parts.
  8. Do not apply throttle when anyone is directly behind the PWC.
    • Water &/or any type of debris coming out of the jet thrust nozzle can seriously injure someone.
  9. Do your homework.
    • Know the area that you will be traveling in; where it's safe to be, where you should avoid, and how to recognize these spots.  Also, it's good to know how to safely remove anything that gets stuck in the impellor.  Even the most watchful eye can easily run over something small.
  10. Do not drink and drive.
    • Drinking alcohol will impair your judgement and slow your reflexes, putting both you and those on the water around you in unnecessary danger.
BomBay Boat Rentals excellent staff can give you the answers to any questions that you have about the wave runner itself, the area you will be traveling in, and any other tips that can keep you safe out there.  You can access Missouri's Official Boater Safety Education Course and be in the water in just a few hours.

Our PWCs rent by the hour, by the day, or even by the week.  Is that not enough time for you? Then you should join our wave runner club for UNLIMITED riding!  Memberships last April through September, and we offer a few different options:  weekdays, 7 days, and family or shared plans.  Call 1-573-348-3433 today and ask for Jason, or visit our website to request more information online about all of our Lake of the Ozarks boat and jet ski rental options.

Lake of the Ozarks Spring Harbor Hop

The 18th Annual Lake of the Ozarks Spring Harbor Hop is just around the corner- Saturday, May 2, 2015.  BomBay Boat Rentals offers ski boats rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks to get you and a few friends to each Harbor Hop stop quickly.  We also offer Lake of the Ozarks tritoon rentals if you want to bring an even larger bunch of people with you. You know what they say, the more, the merrier!

For most people, the annual Harbor Hop marks the first time in the water for the season.  Obviously we all hope for a warm sunny day, but even a little chill in the air won't stop the crowds.  Just grab a sweatshirt and get on out there!  This is a great time for all, and it would be a shame to miss out on it.

How the Harbor Hop works:

You may begin at any one of the over 40 checkpoints participating this year by making the suggested donation of $20 per hand.  You are more than welcome to try your luck at multiple hands if you are feeling lucky.  Your first card is drawn at the spot where your hand is purchased, and you may gather your other 6 cards at whichever 6 spots  you feel like "hopping" to throughout the day.

The final hand is turned in where the 7th card is drawn, but for an additional $5 you may draw a bonus 8th card!  Most importantly, make sure that your hand is turned in by 7:00 p.m. so that it counts and you are eligible for the prizes!

You can be a winner:

Get your boat from the best boat rental company at the Lake of the Ozarks for a full day of playing on the water... you also get a chance to win prizes too!  The actual amounts will depend on how much money is collected that day.

1st Place: 10%
2nd Place: 9%
3rd Place: 8%
4th Place: 7% each
5th - 10th Place: 5% each
4 Worst Hands: 4% each
Random Drawing for 10 Hands: 2% each  (all ties will share the allocated percentage for the placing)

The Bonus

In addition to the regular prize winners, a section winner will be recognized. To be eligible to be a section winner, a player must draw all seven (7) cards within one of these four sections:
  • Gravois Arm
  • Dam - 10MM, Main Channel
  • 13MM - 26MM, Main Channel
  • 28.5MM - 38MM, Main Channel & Big Niangua Arm
This event is sponsored by The Lake of the Ozarks Convention & Visitor Bureau, Lake of the Ozarks Marine Dealers Association and the Lakes Waterfront Restaurants.  A complete list of checkpoints and a map are available (locations are subject to change), and for more detailed information please go to www.Funlake.com
