Why Should I Rent vs. Buy?

If you are trying to decide whether to rent or buy a boat this season, BomBay Boat Rental Co. is here to help you weigh your options! We are the best boat and jet ski rental company at the Lake of the Ozarks, so we have a lot of boating experience and knowledge that we are ready to share with you. Keep reading to learn more and to find out the pros and cons of renting vs. owning a boat.

Lower Cost

Buying a boat at the Lake of the Ozarks can be incredibly expensive. Especially if you are looking for a new boat like the ones available for rent from BomBay Boat Rental. New boats can cost anywhere between $40,000 and $200,000 depending on the type and model you are interested in buying. And the costs don't end there! You will also spend the lifetime of the boat spending money on potentially costly repairs and maintenance (think, winterizing and de-winterizing every year). Renting a boat or jet ski is a very minimal cost and can save you a lot of money in the long run. Not to mention, BomBay Boat Rental Co. uses the newest models of boats so you can have a high-class experience for a low cost.

Variety is the Spice of Boating!

When you rent boats, you can try several different kinds of boats to fit your activity for the day. Looking for a fast boat that can make the tube fly across the water? Rent a ski boat! Looking for a peaceful way to boat with your whole crew while enjoying the sunshine? Rent a pontoon! You never have to choose between your favorites. You can always have the best of both worlds with renting.

Stay Familiar with the Weather

Missouri weather can be fairly unpredictable, so it's important to check the forecast more than once as you get ready to head out for a day of fun. If it starts to rain, it is important to turn back and switch to fun land activities. You may think that a light rain isn't too dangerous; however, that is not always the case. Rain can seriously impede a driver's ability to see other boats, obstacles, and other potentially dangerous objects. When you're driving on the road, you know where to expect other cars to be. But out on the water, there aren't any road lines and a boat can appear in your path before you know it.

Drink Responsibly

As the driver of the boat, of course, you shouldn't drink at all. Drinking and driving carries the same limits and penalties on water as it does on land. As passengers, it's important to drink responsibly while you're out on the water. If you drink too much, it could be very easy for a serious accident to occur. Tripping and falling into the water can quickly turn from a silly blooper into a devastating accident. If you are drinking, make sure to eat plenty of food and stay hydrated throughout the day.

Use Life Jackets

Legally, you must have coast guard approved life jackets on board and accessible for everyone on the boat. That means stowing life jackets deep in the boat under a lot of other supplies could be dangerous. It's also important that the life jackets are the right size and weight rating for your occupants. If someone weighs 200 pounds, a life jacket rated for 150 pounds will be useless. And for someone that weighs 100 pounds (perhaps your teenage kid), an extra large life jacket won't help keep them afloat. Before casting off for a fun day on the Lake, make sure everyone has a life jacket that fits them well and store them in a place that is easily and quickly accessible in case of an emergency.

Take Care of Yourself

It's easy to get excited about finally getting out on the water after spending time prepping the boat, but don't neglect your personal health and safety! Be sure to apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or above) and bring more to reapply, pack snacks and/or a lunch, fill water bottles to stay hydrated and avoid heat exhaustion, and bring sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays. A fun day on the water can suddenly feel not so great if you experience hunger pains, heat exhaustion, dehydration, or sunburn. Take care of yourself this summer!

Ways to Observe Memorial Day 2020!

Memorial Day is just one week away, and summer will officially be underway at the Lake of the Ozarks! This Memorial Day Weekend may look a little different than years past, but there are still a lot of great things to do and ways to observe the occasion this year. BomBay Boat Rental Co. has a few great ideas for you to help inspire your own Memorial Day observance. Keep reading to learn more!

Honor Our Heroes

Memorial Day isn't just another holiday. This is a day set aside to remember on honor fallen troops - heroes. We take this time out of our workweek to remember the sacrifice that has been made so that we can live freely. Because of them, we are able to truly experience living in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

It's important to pause and acknowledge these heroes and their sacrifice. Teach your children about our history as a nation and why Memorial Day is a national holiday, that it's not just about hot dogs and an extra long weekend.

Back to Basics

Staying at home has likely increased the kids' screen time, especially with school being move to an online format. Break away from the screens and get back to basics and the traditions you may have had as a child. Draw hopscotch on the sidewalk and teach the kids how to play, go bike riding or rollerblading in the neighborhood, set up a tent in the backyard for a make-believe camping trip, see if you can make homemade ice cream! ... Think back to your childhood and the fun things you used to do without smartphones. You may be surprised just how fun it is to reconnect over the simpler things.

Enjoy the Freedom of the Lake

While it may not be a good idea to travel or spend time in large groups yet, the water can be a safe place to spend time. Recreational activity on the water is a great way to get out of the stuffy house while still helping prevent the spread of germs between others. Renting a boat at the Lake of the Ozarks can give you and your family the freedom to get out on the water away from crowds while you enjoy time together in the fresh air and sunshine.

Rent a Pontoon for a Great Time!

Warmer weather is here and the Lake of the Ozarks is ready for boaters to start enjoying days on the water. One of the best ways to have a great time at the Lake of the Ozarks is to rent a pontoon and catch some sunshine on the Lake with your family. BomBay Boat Rentals has the best pontoons at the Lake of the Ozarks. Read on to learn more about what a pontoon can do for your vacation at the Lake!

Drive Easy

Pontoons are much easier to drive than other kinds of boats, so you don't have to have a lot of experience in order to stay safe while you're out on the water.

Smoother Ride

Because of their size and construction, pontoons are able to ride smoother across choppy waters than ski boats. They don't tip side to side as much as other kinds of boats, so you can feel more secure and less "sea" sick.

More Space

Because pontoons don't have curved edges, they have more seating and floor space naturally. It's much easier to bring along the items you enjoy having with you for a day on the water. Because of this, it's also easier to bring your dog along for the ride so that they will have more room.

The stability and size of a pontoon also makes it easier to have a relaxing day, soaking in the sunshine and enjoy the cool breezes out on the water. Stretch out on the seats like you can't in other boats and kick back to relax!

BomBay Boat Rental has the best pontoon rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks! You can rent pontoons for a few hours, a whole day, or even the entire week. Whatever your boat rental needs are, BomBay has what you need! Contact one of our four convenient locations to find the perfect rental for you.

Rules of the Water for Jet Skis

Before you jump on the jet ski and get out on the water, it's important to know the rules and regulations of operating a personal watercraft (PWC). BomBay Boat Rental has the best rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we have important information to help you get ready for your day on the water. Read on to learn more!

Legally Operating a PWC

When you are driving a jet ski (or PWC), it is important to remember that all of the same rules apply to you as they do to boaters. You still need to have a boater's license if you were born after January 1st, 1984. There are also specific rules that apply to jet skis that you should know before going out.

For example, the following activities are illegal when driving a PWC:
  • Weave in and out of traffic.
  • Jump over other boats' wakes when you don't have a clear field of vision.
  • Jump into the air within one-hundred feet of a boat.
  • Go too fast (over a no-wake speed) when you're within fifty feet of another boat or person.
  • Driving recklessly and swerving at the last minute.
  • Operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
It's also important to note that you can be held liable if someone else illegally operates a jet ski that you own.

Steering and Stopping a PWC

Jet skis don't operate in the same way that boats do, so it's important to know how to drive and steer them before heading out on the water. Read through this description from the Official Missouri Boating Safety Course Online, and review their study guide to make sure you're fully prepared.

"PWC are propelled by a jet drive where water is drawn into a pump and then forced out under pressure through a steering nozzle at the back of the unit. This “jet” of pressurized water is directed by the steering control—when the steering control is turned, the steering nozzle turns in the same direction. For example, if the steering control is turned right, the nozzle turns right and the jet of water pushes the back of the vessel to the left, which causes the PWC to turn right.

The most important thing to remember about steering most PWC (and other jet-drive vessels) is that you always must have power in order to maintain control. If you allow the engine on a PWC or other jet-propelled vessel to return to idle or shut off during operation, you may lose all steering control. Many PWC will continue in the direction they were headed before the throttle was released or the engine was shut off, no matter which way the steering control is turned.

Always allow plenty of room for stopping. You may not stop immediately eve n after releasing the throttle or shutting off the engine. Even PWC that have a braking system do not stop immediately. Never use reverse (if equipped) to stop a PWC because you or your passengers could be thrown from it."

Safety Tips for PWC

It's easy to get into trouble quickly when operating a jet ski because of how quickly they move. To stay safe, make sure you follow these guidelines.
  • Always wear a life jacket.
  • Don't drive too close to other vehicles or people.
  • Always look both ways over your shoulder before turning or stopping suddenly.
  • Be aware of all traffic in your area.
  • Pay attention to blind spots - both yours and other boaters'.
  • Passengers must sit behind PWC drivers, not in front.
  • Keep loose items away from the pump intake.
  • Never exceed the recommended capacity of the PWC.

Fishing Tips from BomBay Boat Rental!

With the weather warming up, now is the perfect time to get out on the water and go fishing. Fishing at the Lake of the Ozarks is a wonderful pastime that can help you relax and enjoy the great outdoors. BomBay Boat Rental has the best boat rental at the Lake of the Ozarks to help you enjoy your fun day full of great fishing memories. To get ready, read today's blog and learn some of our best fishing tips!

Make a Plan

Some people may just grab a nearby fishing pole and some worms and head out without any plan or knowledge about what they are doing. But not you! You can be much more successful if you start with a plan and a little bit of research. First, it's important to know what kind of fish are available to you, and which kind you want to catch. Once you know the type of fish, you can plan your day accordingly. Some fish bite more readily in the morning, while others are more eager in the evening. Sometimes, a cloudy day can bring out the fish you're looking for. So, before you head out on the open water, do a little bit of research and planning to help have the most successful day possible.

Bring Supplies

All fish are different, so once you know what kind you are fishing for, you can choose the appropriate gear to reel them in one after the other. Be sure to pick the proper rod strength and length to support the lures you plan to use and fish type you intend to catch. It is also important to get the correct kind of bait before you try catching the perfect fish. Not all fish are attracted to worms, so you may need to invest in special lures that imitate your fish's prey. The type of lure you use could make or break your fishing experience.
