Rules of the Water for Jet Skis

Before you jump on the jet ski and get out on the water, it's important to know the rules and regulations of operating a personal watercraft (PWC). BomBay Boat Rental has the best rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we have important information to help you get ready for your day on the water. Read on to learn more!


Legally Operating a PWC


When you are driving a jet ski (or PWC), it is important to remember that all of the same rules apply to you as they do to boaters. You still need to have a boater's license if you were born after January 1st, 1984. There are also specific rules that apply to jet skis that you should know before going out.

For example, the following activities are illegal when driving a PWC: 
  • Weave in and out of traffic.
  • Jump over other boats' wakes when you don't have a clear field of vision.
  • Jump into the air within one-hundred feet of a boat. 
  • Go too fast (over a no-wake speed) when you're within fifty feet of another boat or person. 
  • Driving recklessly and swerving at the last minute. 
  • Operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
It's also important to note that you can be held liable if someone else illegally operates a jet ski that you own. 

Steering and Stopping a PWC


Jet skis don't operate in the same way that boats do, so it's important to know how to drive and steer them before heading out on the water. Read through this description from the Official Missouri Boating Safety Course Online, and review their study guide to make sure you're fully prepared. 

"PWC are propelled by a jet drive where water is drawn into a pump and then forced out under pressure through a steering nozzle at the back of the unit. This “jet” of pressurized water is directed by the steering control—when the steering control is turned, the steering nozzle turns in the same direction. For example, if the steering control is turned right, the nozzle turns right and the jet of water pushes the back of the vessel to the left, which causes the PWC to turn right.

The most important thing to remember about steering most PWC (and other jet-drive vessels) is that you always must have power in order to maintain control. If you allow the engine on a PWC or other jet-propelled vessel to return to idle or shut off during operation, you may lose all steering control. Many PWC will continue in the direction they were headed before the throttle was released or the engine was shut off, no matter which way the steering control is turned.

Always allow plenty of room for stopping. You may not stop immediately eve n after releasing the throttle or shutting off the engine. Even PWC that have a braking system do not stop immediately. Never use reverse (if equipped) to stop a PWC because you or your passengers could be thrown from it."


Safety Tips for PWC 


It's easy to get into trouble quickly when operating a jet ski because of how quickly they move. To stay safe, make sure you follow these guidelines. 
  • Always wear a life jacket.
  • Don't drive too close to other vehicles or people. 
  • Always look both ways over your shoulder before turning or stopping suddenly. 
  • Be aware of all traffic in your area. 
  • Pay attention to blind spots - both yours and other boaters'.
  • Passengers must sit behind PWC drivers, not in front.
  • Keep loose items away from the pump intake. 
  • Never exceed the recommended capacity of the PWC.

Boat Membership Benefits


As a member of this program, you will receive 4 days of advanced reservations. This can be reserved as one 4-day rental, two 2-day rentals, 4 separate days, and so on. Divide these days up to fit your boating needs for ultimate convenience!

After these days, you will have unlimited access by simply calling 1 day in advance for a 24-hour reservation.

With this package, you will also have access to BomBay's wave runners. Reserve your wave runner 7 days in advance for 4-hour intervals.

Boat Membership Costs


There are a few different options for your Boat Membership:

5-Day Membership
This membership allows you to take advantage of your boat rental days between Monday and Friday (no weekends).
Pay the membership fun fee of $4,200 once and then make 6 monthly payments of $325 from April through September.

7-Day Membership
This option allows you access any day of the week, Monday through Sunday!
Pay the membership fun fee of $6,500 one time, then 6 monthly payments of $425, April-September.

Shared 7-Day Membership
This option is great because it allows you to share your membership costs and benefits with someone else. Take advantage of rentals every day of the week, Monday-Sunday.
The one-time membership fun fee is $8,000, followed by 6 monthly payments of $600 between April and September.

If monthly payments for any of the packages are made all at once, you can receive a 10% discount!

Members are responsible for the fuel they use.

Protection Plans for Boat Memberships


There are a few ways you can help protect against damage costs with your boat membership. Choose what works best for you out of these three options:
  1. Damage deposit of $1,000 on a credit card. 
  2. $300 annually for a protection plan that protects up to $2,000 in accidental damage. 
  3. Pay $65 each time you take a boat out for a protection plan that will protect up to $1,000 in accidental damage. 

Wave Runner Membership Benefits


When you choose this program, you will receive 2 days of advanced reservations. You can use these two days together or as two separate rental days.

After these two advanced reservation days, you will have unlimited access by simply calling 1 day in advance for a 4-hour reservation, if available.

Wave Runner Membership Costs


Choose from three great plan options!

5-Day Membership
This membership allows you to take advantage of your wave runner rental days between Monday and Friday (no weekends).
Pay the membership fun fee of $900 once and then make 6 monthly payments of $125 from April through September.

7-Day Membership
This option allows you access any day of the week, Monday through Sunday!
Pay the membership fun fee of $1,500 one time, then 6 monthly payments of $175, April-September.

Shared 7-Day Membership
This option is great because it allows you to share your membership costs and benefits with someone else. Take advantage of rentals every day of the week, Monday-Sunday.

Get Certified and Ready for the Season!

Soon the Lake will be bustling with spring and summer activity! BomBay Boat Rentals offers the best boat and jet ski rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we can’t wait for each of our locations to open soon. Get ready for the season and boating with BomBay by getting your Missouri Boaters Certification. Today we are talking about how easy it is to get your certification for a safer, more worry-free day on the Lake. Read on to learn how!


Do I Need to be Certified?


If you were born after January 1st, 1984, then you will need to get your Missouri Boating Certificate before you operate a boat or personal watercraft (PWC) at the Lake of the Ozarks. (Note: Out of state licenses are honored by the state of Missouri.)

If you were born before January 1st, 1984, you do not legally need a Missouri Boating Certificate to operate a boat, but the class could still be a very helpful tool for you while you’re out on the water. The Lake of the Ozarks is the #1 recreation lake in the United States, so it is a very popular destination with a lot of boat traffic during the season. Taking the class and getting your certification could teach you the laws of the water and help you stay safer.

How Long Does Certification Last?


Once you have gone through the class and passed the test, you will receive your Boater Education Card that lasts for life. You don’t have to retake the exam over and over once you are certified.


What to Know About the Exam


You can take an in-seat class if you prefer to learn in-person, and a written test will be administered at the end of the class. However, there is also a very convenient online option that can be found at www.boat-ed.com/missouri/.

The course itself is only $41.50 (remember, it’s for life!). This gives you access to the course and several other resources to help you be successful, including a study guide for the exam. You will not have to make the payment until you have passed the exam. You will also get two chances to take the exam and pass.


How Long Until My Card Arrives?


The official Missouri Boating Certification Card will be mailed to the address you provided during the Boating Education Course and examination. It takes about 45 days for the card to arrive via mail, so a temporary operating permit can be printed in the meantime. This will allow you to enjoy the open waters while you wait for the official card to arrive.


Boating with BomBay


BomBay Boat Rental does not require a Missouri Boating Certification to rent a boat. However, you could receive hefty fines from the State of Missouri if you were born after January 1st, 1984 and do not have one.

If you get here and want to rent a boat at the Lake of the Ozarks, but forgot to get your license, there is one more option. Each of our locations offers a one-time, temporary 7-day certificate for just $9. Keep in mind that this is temporary and you can only go this route once. The Boating Education Course can help you feel more confident out on the water so you have a more relaxed vacation at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Be Prepared for a FUN Day Out on the Water With These Tips

When you visit the Lake of the Ozarks, there is no better way to spend to your time than being out on the water! If you don't own a boat, we make getting out on the water easy with affordable boat rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks! Of course, when you plan a day out on the water, there is some planning involved to ensure you have a fun day! Today, your favorite boat rental company at the Lake of the Ozarks has some tips for having a FUN day out on the water!


1. Take it Slow

When driving around docks or other boaters, taking it slow is the best option. Unlike vehicles, boats don’t have a break to quickly stop when needed. Taking your time when driving a boat on the water makes for a safer and more enjoyable outing.

2. Stay Hydrated

Be sure to bring plenty of water to keep everyone hydrated. The summer heat can quickly dehydrate the body. Staying on top of this situation is beneficial for all. The last thing anyone wants when trying to enjoy the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks is to get sick from a lack of water.

3. Pack Those Snacks

Do not forget to pack food to last for the duration of your voyage. Along with staying hydrated, having enough food is crucial for a great day on the water. Your group will be cranky if you do not have enough food for them!

4. Waterproof Bag

Although no one plans on getting their personal items wet, it does happen. Place phones, wallets, and other items in a waterproof bag or plastic bag at the least. Keeping these items in a safe location on the boat helps keep them dry as well.

5. Sunscreen

Remember to pack the sunblock to protect from getting too burnt while out on the water all day. Being around water can multiply the sun’s rays, so you are more apt to get a sunburn.



6. Dress Appropriately

Bringing clothing that can cover your skin if you do get too much sun is a good idea. Also packing sunglasses and hats to protect your face and eyes can be helpful for enjoying your boating experience.

7. Lifejacket

Making sure to have properly fitting life jackets for everyone attending is also a good idea. Nothing is more uncomfortable than wearing a lifejacket that is either too big or, even worse, too small! A properly fitting life preserver helps everyone enjoy themselves in the water.

8. Weather Check

Before setting out on an excursion on the boat, double-check the weather to make sure nothing has changed. Having your family and friends out on a boat while it is raining will be memorable, but not the most fun situation. Being on the water during a storm can be dangerous as well. Checking the weather throughout the day is also a good idea, if your device allows. Missouri weather changes frequently, so don’t be caught off guard on the water.

Lake Race is THIS Weekend!

Summer has officially kicked off at the Lake of the Ozarks and this weekend marks one of the best annual events at the Lake of the Ozarks - Lake Race! This will be the 7th year of the Offshore Powerboat Association bringing the most powerful boats in the world to compete on the water! This year, Lake Race will be held at Camden on the Lake but the best way to get a great view of the race is on the water! Boat & WaveRunner Memberships Let You Have Repeat Fun Without the Expense of Ownership!

Boating is one of the best ways to enjoying living at the Lake of the Ozarks but let's face it owning a boat can get expensive. Not only do you have to pay for the price of the boat but you also have to keep up the yearly maintenance and any repair bills that come up. When you invest in a boat membership at the Lake of the Ozarks, you get the best of both worlds by having unlimited access to new boats without having to worry about the upkeep that comes with owning a boat! BomBay Boat Memberships

5-day membership Monday Friday Access Only (No Weekends)

Membership Fun Fee $4,200.00 (Only paid one time)
6 Monthly Payments $325.00 (April – September) (10% disc if paid once)

7-day membership Monday – Sunday Access

Membership Fun Fee $6,500.00 (Only paid one time)
6 Monthly Payments $425.00 (April – September) (10% disc if paid once)

Shared 7-day membership Monday – Sunday Access

Membership Fun Fee $8,000.00 (Only paid one time)
6 Monthly Payments $600.00 (April – September) (10% disc if paid once)

As a Member:

You will receive 6 Days of advanced reservations. These can be 6 separate
days, two 2 day rentals, or, one 6 day rental. These days can be divided up
however the customer chooses.

After that the customer has unlimited access by calling 7 days in advance
and you can keep the boat for 48 hours.

Members have 2 options concerning damages to the boats.

1st Choice: Have a damage deposit of $1000.00 on a credit card.

2nd Choice: Pay $300.00 annually for a protection plan that will protect up
to $2000.00 in accidental damage.

3rd Choice: Pay $65.00 each time you take a boat out for a protection plan that will protect up to $1000.00 in accidental damage.

Members are responsible for the fuel that they use.
As a boat member, you have access to our waverunners. Boat Members can take
waverunners for 4-hour intervals and can reserve a waverunner 7 days in advance.


BomBay Waverunner Memberships

6 Monthly Payments $125.00 (April – September) (10% disc if paid once)

7 day membership Monday – Sunday Access

Membership Fun Fee $2000.00 (Only paid one time)

As a Member:

You will receive 2 Days of advanced reservations. These can be 2 separate
days, one 2 day rental. These days can be divided up however the customer
chooses. After that the customer has unlimited access by calling 7 days in
advance and can keep the waverunner for 24 hours if it is available.
After that the customer has unlimited access by calling 7 days in advance
and you can reserve the waverunner for 4 hours at a time.

Members have 3 options concerning damages to the boats.

1st Choice: Have a damage deposit of $300.00 on a credit card.

2nd Choice: Pay $200.00 annually for a protection plan that will protect up
to $1000.00 in accidental damage.

3rd Option: Pay $35.00 each time you ride the waverunner. This will protect
the customer up to $500.00 in accidental damage.
