Halloween Costume & Movie Ideas for the Boat Lover

The best boat rental company at the Lake of the Ozarks is still open for business.  You can still give us a call and reserve a boat or jet ski rental any day, but we realize that Halloween night you probably won't be out on the water.  Because of this, BomBay Boat Rental Company has some suggestions for you that keep boating in the forefront this holiday.

BOATING COSTUMES

Your love of boating and everything that goes along with it can show loud and clear through what you choose to wear this Halloween.  There are plenty of incredible ideas out there revolving around the boating world, both real and fictional.

  • Ship's Captain
  • Sailor
  • Pirate
  • Octopus
  • Jellyfish
  • Mermaid
  • Poseidon

BOATING MOVIES

As long as you are a big enough lover of boating to not frighten yourself away from it, there are some great movies out there featuring water, boats, and some big aquatic creatures.  Some are scary, some are cheesy, but if you are up for it, you may enjoy these old favorites.

Friday the 13th
Everyone has heard about Jason and Crystal Lake.  This movie not only makes lakes creepy, but Summer camp and hockey masks too.  If you like it, there are plenty of sequels to watch all weekend long, including a more recent remake.

Creature From the Black Lagoon
You know how sometimes when you are in the lake and something brushes up against you, but then it's gone before you see it?  Well, it can't possibly be a prehistoric creature like in this 1954 horror classic.

Ghost Ship
When a salvage crew finds a long-lost ship floating in the Bering Sea, they prepare to tow it back to land.  The ship has other ideas.

Dead Calm
You don't normally get hitchhikers on a boat, but if you do, beware!  They may not be as innocent as they seem.

Jaws
"Just when you thought it was safe to get back into the water..."  Actually, that tagline is from Jaws 2, but you get the idea.  A gigantic white shark is terrorizing everyone, and a police chief, a marine scientist, and a fisherman are the ones that have to stop it.

Lake Placid
This time, it's a giant 30-foot-long man-eating crocodile out to destroy everyone in its path.  Who will save the people of Black Lake, Maine?

There you have it.  You can get all dressed up and go out for Halloween, or stay in, turn off the lights, and settle in for a scary movie.  With these suggestions from BomBay Boat Rental Company, you don't have to forget about your love of the water while you enjoy the holiday.  No matter what you decide to do, please have a very happy, very safe Halloween weekend.  When you are ready to get back on the Lake, we'll be here, ready and waiting for you.

Autumn is Amazing From a Boat

We have reached the wonderful point in Autumn where the Lake area is painted in vibrant colors, traffic has quieted down, and the weather is not too hot, not too cold, but just right.  This is an awesome time to rent a boat at the Lake of the Ozarks.  There is a lot to see and do, but not as many people to maneuver your way around.  BomBay Boat Rental Company is still here and waiting to send you out on the Lake.  How can you resisit?

Breathtaking Views

Bluffs along the shoreline are excellent spots for viewing Fall colors.  There are numerous places that are untouched and free to grow.  The Lake of the Ozarks State Park and Ha Ha Tonka both have docks to tie up to. This allows you to do a little bit of exploring when you see a beautiful area that you would like to get a closer look at.  Those are just two of many areas along the more than 1,150 miles of shoreline to marvel at.  Every cove has a beauty of its own to offer.

Crisp Fall Weather

2015 has been extra nice weather-wise, and we've gotten a lot more warm and sunny days for boating than expected.  Usually, this time of year is perfect jacket weather, but not so cold that it is unbearable to be outside.  The cool breeze on your face is invigorating, and the fresh air is unbelievable.  Boating is the absolute best activity to take part in before the icy cold winter hits.

Quiet Water

The hustle and bustle of the busy Summer season has passed.  The Lake is wide open most days for a smooth cruise around the water.  Many waterfront bars and restaurants will keep their doors open as long as the weather is nice and the boaters are still showing up.  This is an awesome time of year to relax and enjoy all of your favorite spots, and maybe try out a few new ones to frequent next year.

Autumn is an incredible time to go boating.  The peace, quiet, and beauty will give you one of the most wonderful experiences that you can imagine.  BomBay Boat Rental Company is ready to get you out there.  Reserve one of our Lake of the Ozarks boat rentals by visiting our web page or giving us a call.  Hopefully you'll have the time for lots of trips, but make a point to get out on the water at least one more time this year.

Introduce Your Kids to a Love for Boating

Boating on our incredibly beautiful lake is an experience that can be difficult to express in mere words.  The best way to get someone to understand how truly amazing it is is to get them out on the water.  Passing a love of boating on to your children will offer them a lifetime of memories.  Taking out one of our boat rentals on the Lake of the Ozarks is an excellent way to introduce your kids to this incredible pastime.

There are a few different things that you can do, both before your boating excursion and during, to make it a fun and memorable time for the young ones that have never been out on the water.

Teach them the terms.

Young kids learn pretty quickly, and picking up a few boating terms feels like knowing a cool, new language.  Finding out what you call the front of the boat (bow) and the back (stern) before they step onto one will make them feel like an expert.

Get some fun gear.

Life jackets are a necessity on a boat.  BomBay Boat Rentals provides them for you, but there are some really cool ones out there for kids.  If they show up with their own life jacket sporting their favorite cartoon character, that adds to the excitement of the trip.  Doing a little fishing while you are out there is always fun.  If they have their very own kid-sized poles to use it's even better.

Add in a water sport.

Tubing is a very popular thing to do on the water, especially for children.  If they are up for the challenge, skiing can be a lot of fun too. These are two things that can only be done if you have a boat to pull you!  All kids love swimming, too, and the multitude of quiet coves on this lake are wonderful for that.

Pack a picnic.

It's wise to plan some stops along the way with first-timers.  A little time once in a while back on familiar dry land can be a nice break.  There are lots of gorgeous state parks and a few nice beaches in the Lake area.  Load up a basket of your kids' favorite foods and take a boating break in one of these spots.

When the day is over, discuss all of the fun that you had.  Relive the memories with stories or pictures that you took.  Talk about the next time that you will rent a boat at the Lake of the Ozarks.  Getting your children to fall in love with boating will not be a hard sell.  BomBay Boat Rental Company is here for you when you are ready to take them out.  Soon they'll be asking to learn all about our jet ski rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks too.

The Fish of the Lake of the Ozarks

Fishing at the Lake of the Ozarks is incredible in the Fall.  The waters are emptier and much calmer, and there are plenty of active fish to catch.  BomBay Boat Rental Company at the Lake of the Ozarks has some info for you about a few fish that are commonly found in the area this time of year.

Bass

You can catch these fish throughout the year, but fishing is the best for them in the Spring and the Fall.  They are the most active early in the morning and at dusk.  Many tournaments in the Lake area are dedicated to this particular fish. You will find them anywhere between 9-15 inches in length and anywhere from 1/4 pound to just over a pound, although larger ones have been caught around here.

Crappie

Crappie in the Lake are generally 9-10 inches long and around 4 pounds.  Small jigs and minnows work the best on crappie.  This is one of the most popular panfish caught in Missouri.  You are most likely to find them in open water closet to plenty of cover, like trees or brush that have fallen into the water.   You can find them all times of the day, but night is when they are the most active.

Catfish

This fish is a popular one to catch and cook at the Lake.  Blue catfish remain active later into the Fall season.  They love open water.  You are most likely to find them well away from the shoreline, often in deep flats, river channel breaks, and the mouths of coves.  They vary in length anywhere between 20-44 inches, and can weigh as little as 3 pounds and as much as 40 most of the time. Rumors of "monster catfish" run rampant in the area, and although this is a tall tale, catfish have been known to have been caught between 80-100 pounds.

Walleye

Since the mid-1990's, the Lake has been stocked with Walleye.  They seem to prefer brightly colored jigs.  Using jigs tipped with nightcrawlers and minnows works extremely well too.  They make their way up to shallower waters at night, but they tend to hang out in pools that are 12 feet or deeper during the day. Their weight varies between 8 ounces to 8 pounds  most of the time, but they can get larger.  They are usually 12-28 inches long.

Bluegill

Fisherman enjoy the flavor of the bluegill, and so do larger fish. They prefer to inhabit warm, clear water where there is plenty of cover.  A school of about 20-30 are normally found swimming together.  Most of them are just over 9 inches long and weigh around 12 ounces.

You bring the poles and bait, we've got the boats, and the Lake is full of fish. Spend some time on the water this Fall in one of our Lake of the Ozarks boat rentals enjoying the relaxing sport of fishing.  One more incredible way to enjoy this magnificent lake in this crisp Autumn weather.
