Wear a life jacket
It's the law that you have enough life jackets for every person on board. Statistics note that 9 out of 10 drownings could have been prevented with a life jacket. Even if you are a good swimmer, many scenarios are possible where you may not be able to help yourself in the event of a crash of accidental fall overboard. It's always better to be safe than sorry.
Maintain a safe speed and distance from other boats
Boats do not have breaks. If you are cruising too close to other boats, you may not be able to stop or turn quickly enough to avoid a collision. The same goes for speed. Driving too fast makes it very difficult to slow down quickly enough if you are in the same path as another boater.
Don't drink and boat
Alcohol combined with boating is extremely dangerous. It is illegal for the driver of the boat to drink at all. Passengers may, but drinking too much can make the boat a dangerous place. A float plan lets someone that is not on the boat with you know what to do if you do not return or check-in when expected.
